The construction of new primary schools at Blindwells and Craighall in East Lothian, Scotland, has reached a milestone with the installation of steel frames.

The steel structures now outline the buildings’ form and feature a ‘sawtooth’ roof design, which will include skylights.

The sites have seen further progress, with drainage works nearing completion and foundations fully laid.

In the coming weeks, the focus will remain on the steel frames and drainage systems while roofing is scheduled to commence in mid-2024.

Hub South East project director Andrew Thornton said: “It’s fantastic to see the progress being made on both builds, taking us closer to the exciting plans for Craighall and Blindwells becoming reality.

“The designs for these new schools have been developed using Passivhaus principles, so pupils and staff will not only benefit from modern new learning spaces, the buildings themselves will be energy efficient and will assist our client in meeting progressive Scottish Government environmental targets.”

Construction, which commenced this year, is said to be on track for completion in early 2025.

The project’s budget for both schools is estimated at £49.6m ($63.36m), with the majority of the funding sourced from Section 75 developer contributions.

In January this year, East Lothian Council’s development partner Hub South East was selected to deliver the schools while Balfour Beatty was chosen as the principal contractor.

Balfour Beatty operations director Atholl McKay said: “Once complete next year, these new high-quality, energy-efficient schools will serve as key community hubs, supporting the educational needs of the growing local population.”
