The rehabilitation works have successfully completed on the Loop Parkway and Meadowbrook State Parkway drawbridges in Nassau County’s South Shore, US.
The two drawbridges, located over Long Creek and Sloop Channel, have been under repair since autumn 2022/2023.
The Loop Parkway bridge is a link connecting the Long Beach barrier island to New York state’s parkways.
Meanwhile, the Meadowbrook bridge serves as a main route to Jones Beach and other beaches along the South Shore.
The $13.1m project included the replacement of steel decks on both structures, using over 10,000ft2 of new, galvanised steel in prefabricated sections.
To facilitate the deck replacement, workers employed flame-lit torches to remove the old decks and prepared the frame for the new installation.

By GlobalDataThe process involved balancing the bascule spans with weights to maintain their upward position during the removal and installation phases.
The project was planned in stages to ensure that the bridges remained operational.
The westbound section of the Loop Parkway and the central sections of the Meadowbrook Parkway’s spans were completed in the initial phase during winter 2022/2023.
Subsequent work involved the replacement of the remaining sections the following winter.
A barge was placed under the bridges to provide access for workers and to prevent any debris from contaminating the water below.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul said: “The on-time completion of work on these two historic bridges will help get the Long Island summer off to a great start and eliminate any construction-related hassles beachgoers may face this weekend.”
The refurbishment is said to have extended the service life of the bridges, which were both constructed in 1934, as well as improved their resilience.
Maintenance efforts will persist under the Loop Parkway drawbridge.
This includes work on the concrete support piers and the restoration of natural vegetation adjacent to the road.
