Germany-based STIHL has announced the commencement of construction of a new factory in Oradea, Romania, which will house a new battery production facility. 

The ground-breaking ceremony was held last week, marking a milestone in the company’s growth strategy.

The new site is an addition to STIHL’s international manufacturing network, which spans seven countries across four continents. 

To be constructed on a 147,000m² site, the production facility will encompass a usable floor space of nearly 47,000m².

Commencement of regular production is scheduled for September 2025.  

By 2028, the Andreas STIHL Power Tools plant is expected to provide approximately 700 jobs.

STIHL Advisory and Supervisory Board chair Nikolas Stihl said: “We currently manufacture battery products in our factories in Langkampfen, Austria, in Virginia Beach, USA, as well as in China and Germany. 

“This year we will also start producing battery-operated devices at our German headquarters in Waiblingen and, from 2025, also in Oradea. This will significantly improve our competitiveness in the battery segment.”  

Throughout the project’s planning and construction phases, STIHL claims to have prioritised sustainability and environmental protection.  

The company has plans to obtain certification from the German Sustainable Building Council upon the facility’s completion.  

The plant’s design includes the installation of photovoltaic systems and the use of geothermal energy for heating and cooling the office building.  

In addition, the facility aims to avoid the use of fossil gases and incorporate green roofs. 

Earlier this year, the company announced the relocation of the functions of STIHL Plant 5 in Ludwigsburg, Germany, to STIHL Plant 2 in Waiblingen-Neustadt.
