The Singapore Ministry of Transport has revealed the completion of the Johor Bahru (JB)-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link Project’s connecting span.

This connecting span connects the marine viaduct between Singapore and Malaysia.

An event was held at the RTS Link Marine Viaduct site in the Straits of Johor to celebrate the construction milestone.

Malaysia Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong attended the ceremony.

The 340-tonne connecting span measures 17.1 metres (m) in length and is situated between Malaysia’s Pier 47 and Singapore’s Pier 48.

Construction required the erection of temporary support structures comprising steel beams and hydraulic jacks, more than 26m above sea level.

Once the support structures were installed and accurately aligned, the newly constructed connecting span was lowered into its designated position.

The marine works were closely monitored to ensure safety and timeliness. With the completion of this, work will continue on the civil structures of the RTS Link.

Once the civil structures are completed, they will be handed over to RTS Operations, which will oversee the installation of the project’s rail systems.

RTS Operations is a joint venture between Prasarana Malaysia and SMRT Corporation.

The RTS Link is expected to commence passenger services by December 2026.

Singapore Ministry of Transport Acting Minister Chee Hong Tat said: “As a third land connection, the RTS Link will make travel between our two countries more convenient, and benefit both Singaporeans and Malaysians. Many Singaporeans, including my residents from Bishan-Toa Payoh, are looking forward to travelling on the RTS Link to Johor Bahru.

“They can take the MRT on the Thomson East Coast Line to Woodlands North Station, clear immigration, and arrive in JB after a five-minute ride on the RTS Link train.”
