UK-based company Kier Living has collaborated with Forest Carbon to plant 45,000 new trees by 2020 with an aim to reduce its carbon usage.
Forest Carbon is a company that is committed to the voluntary creation of carbon woodland in the UK.
Over the next three years, Kier Living will develop a total of 15,000 trees each year.
Kier Living executive director John Anderson said: “Although we are pleased to be leading by example and to be the first UK housebuilder to commit to this initiative with Forest Carbon, we know that we and the house building industry need to do more for the environment.
“It is a major undertaking but one which we are 100% committed to achieving, and we’re looking forward to becoming a more carbon-efficient housebuilder by 2020.”
The new project, which is part of Kier Living’s Greener Living campaign, focuses on balancing its annual 3,500t carbon footprint.

By GlobalDataForest Carbon director Stephen Prior said: “UK forestry is in desperate need of expansion. We are among the least forested countries in Europe and yet, for example, a staggering 80% of the timber we use is imported.
We also need new woodlands for habitat, flood mitigation, cleaner rivers, and community access, all on top of carbon capture. Kier Living’s tremendous contribution is across all these project types.”
Besides partnering with Forest Carbon, Kier Living is also implementing environment-friendly working practices across all of its development sites.
Since 2006, Forest Carbon has planted 5.5 million trees across the UK and has partnered with several companies to reduce more than 1,200,000t of carbon emissions in the country.
