Lexington city officials in Kentucky, US, have broken ground on the new ten-acre Town Branch Park project, as reported in a Facebook post.

Town Branch Park is a green space near the new Central Bank Center and Rupp Arena. It will act as a trailhead for the downtown trail system, including links to the Town Branch Trail and the Legacy Trail.

Once complete, the public park will comprise a permanent stage and performance space, play areas for children, a pet park, water features, art pieces, and an emergence of the Town Branch flowing through the property.

Private donations assisted in funding the public park.

Lexington mayor Linda Gorton said: “This is a great day in Downtown Lexington.

“Town Branch Park will be a place of community celebration; a place to bring your children and your visitors; a place to enjoy a brisk walk or an evening stroll. Thank you to the many people who have made this possible and especially to Ann Bakhaus, who has led this effort with determination and grace.”

Construction on the park is expected for completion in early 2025.

Kentucky news provider FOX 56 quoted the development’s executive director Allison Lankford as saying: “Since its inception, Town Branch Park was envisioned as Lexington’s living room, a place where everyone is welcome, and the community can flourish.

“We are thankful for the overwhelming support for this project, and today we take the next big step to creating a park shaped by the input of thousands of Lexingtonians who graciously shared their knowledge, ideas, and vision for this world-class park.”
