A curable formaldehyde-free resin has been described in a recently filed patent (Publication Number: US20230174730A1). The resin is in the form of an aqueous dispersion and consists of several components. Component a) is a reducing sugar, which can be selected from monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, polysaccharides, or mixtures thereof. Component b) is a polycarboxylic acid, which can be citric acid, succinic acid, tartaric acid, adipic acid, anhydrides, salts thereof, or combinations thereof. Component c) is one or more polyols with a molecular weight of less than 1000 g/mol, such as ethylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol, 1,4-butanediol, and others. Component d) is epoxysilane.

The total amount of component c) in the curable formaldehyde-free resin is between 0.5% and 10% by weight with respect to the sum of components a) and b). The amount of component d) is from 0.1% to less than or equal to 2% by weight with respect to the sum of components a) and b).

The patent also describes specific embodiments of the curable formaldehyde-free resin. For example, in one embodiment, component a) is a dextrin, particularly a maltodextrin with a DE (dextrose equivalent) between 11 and 21. In another embodiment, component a) is a maltodextrin with a DE between 17 and 19, and component b) is citric acid. The resin can also consist of 50% to 80% by weight maltodextrin and 20% to 50% by weight citric acid, preferably 60% to 70% maltodextrin and 25% to 40% citric acid.

The patent further discloses that the polyol component c) can be selected from various options, including ethylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol, 1,4-butanediol, 1,3-butanediol, 1,5-pentanediol, 1,6-hexanediol, glycerol, diglycerol, triglycerol, triethanolamine, diethanolamine, trimethylolpropane, propylene glycol, poly(ethylene) glycol, and combinations thereof. The total amount of component c) in the resin can range from 1% to 6% by weight with respect to the sum of components a) and b), preferably between 2% and 5% by weight, and more preferably between 3% and 4% by weight.

The patent also includes a method for manufacturing the curable formaldehyde-free resin, which involves premixing component c) and component d). Additionally, the resin can be used as a binder for mineral wool, and the cured binder can be applied to mineral fibers to produce a mineral wool product. The cured binder is obtained by curing the resin at temperatures higher than 100°C.
