UK-based real estate builders and construction company Winvic has received a contract to develop the first phase of the West Midlands Interchange (WMI) project.

This £1bn WMI strategic rail freight interchange, which is scheduled to be finished in 2034, will have eight million square feet of commercial space on the 734-acre site.

Winvic Civils and Infrastructure’s director Rob Cook said: “During early contractor involvement, Winvic has worked for over 12 months as the design stage partner on West Midlands Interchange and with the fantastic relationships built with Oxford Properties and Logistics Capital Partners in that time, Winvic is primed to deliver the first phase civils and infrastructure works.

“We are known for the successful delivery of similar intermodal logistics schemes, sustainable projects and employment and training opportunities to local people, so we look forward to applying our tried and tested collaborative approach to create this best-in-class logistics park and strategic rail freight interchange.”

The scope of this project includes new road infrastructure, as well as improvements to the existing road and public right-of-way network, energy infrastructure reconfiguration and undergrounding, and earthworks necessary to establish development plots and landscape zones.

Construction works will begin later this year.

In May 2020, the project first received planning permission. It is currently being financed and executed by Oxford Properties, which purchased the WMI site in July 2021 in collaboration with European developer Logistics Capital Partners (LCP).

LCP’s UK Business head John Pagdin said: “We are delighted to be working with Winvic again following earlier successful collaborations to deliver the UK’s newest and most exciting strategic rail freight site.”

Additionally, communities adjacent to the site have been consulted regarding the features of a potential 109 acres of community park that will feature walking and cycling paths, improved canal corridors, and additional woodlands.
