Denmark-based concrete manufacturer IBF has created low-carbon paving stones for the 1.5ha development of the trailer parking area in the Port of Aalborg, Denmark.
The port is set to leverage Betolar’s cement-free Geoprime binder solution on what is said to be the first large-scale concrete construction project using the binder solution.
Betolar CCO Ville Voipio said: “The partnership project aimed at halving emissions is ambitious. It has required the close cooperation of the entire value chain.
“At the same time, it shows that the circular economy solution we have developed that utilises industrial side streams also works in large construction projects.
“We have been doing development work with IBF for a long time. Now there is a product on the Danish market that radically cuts emissions compared to traditional products.”
The 90mm-thick paving stone solution from IBF is divided into two components, with its foundation made of cement-free Geoprime material, substituting cement with side stream material from the steel industry.

The product aids biodiversity and fulfils global criteria for a circular economy by using side streams.
Port of Aalborg project manager Brian Dalby Rasmussen said: “Our goal is to be a pioneer in sustainable development in our field.
“In the tendering [process], IBF was the most innovative concrete manufacturer that was able to demonstrate a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of more than 50%.
“The emission reductions we set were exceeded when using IBF and Betolar’s solution.”
