Oldham Council in the UK has selected property developer Muse to build a new area in the town centre, which will feature 2,000 new mixed-tenure housing units.

The company plans to build the new houses in collaboration with the council, therefore supporting the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Homes England with building future homes and clearing brownfield land.

Oldham Council leader and councillor Arooj Shah said: “The aim is to create 2,000 new homes on what are currently some of the council’s own sites – including the Civic Centre – to provide the much-needed variety of new homes for our residents and help meet our housing demand targets set by the government.

“Over time, new communities making their homes in our town centre will bring a boost to local businesses; the increase in council tax receipts will benefit the council financially; and life will be brought back into a town centre that, like many others, has struggled in recent years.”

Along with these new homes, the ‘Creating a Better Place’ plan is expected to transform Oldham through a £285m investment and create more than 1,000 new jobs and 100 apprenticeship opportunities in the area.

Muse North West managing director Phil Mayall said: “We’re proud to have been selected by the council to deliver its ambitious vision for regeneration in the town and we’re excited to get started.

“We’re at the start of our journey with the council and we’re very much looking forward to getting out in the community as soon as we’re able, as we build a brighter future for Oldham, together.”

Furthermore, the development will include a new public park in the city centre and a renovated Spindles, which will be transformed from a mainly retail destination to a community space. This includes new stores, workspaces, and a leisure and entertainment offering.

A newly constructed theatre will also feature in the cultural sector of the town, and the Old Town Hall’s Egyptian Room will be renovated into a modern food hall with six informal dining-style food spaces, a bar, and a central seating space.
