Ground has been broken on a new terminal at the John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York, US.

The ground breaking event was attended by New Terminal One (NTO) – a consortium of labour, operating and financial partners – along with New York Governor Kathy Hochul, officials of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, local elected leaders, main sponsors of the project – Ferrovial, Carlyle, JLC Infrastructure, and Ullico, and others.

The 2.4mft2 terminal costs $9.5bn.

This project, also called as New Terminal One, is anticipated to create over 10,000 total jobs, including more than 6,000 construction positions.

Commencement of the construction comes after a revised agreement last year between the Port Authority and NTO.

Once fully completed, the NTO will cater as a global gateway to the New York metropolitan area, and also become the largest international terminal at JFK.

Before beginning construction, NTO had contracted with 101 MWBE firms and paid over $64.7m for providing professional services through main engineering, planning, construction, and design work.

NTO will be constructed on the sites of the existing Terminal 1, Terminal 2, and the previous Terminal 3.

It will be built in phases, with entire completion expected by the end of this decade.

The New Terminal One will also have more than 300,000ft2 of dining, retail, lounges, and recreational space.

Being overseen by infrastructure operator Ferrovial, the project’s construction and design will be led by AECOM Tishman and Gensler, a design and architecture firm.
