Swedish construction company NCC, together with Region Jönköping County, has commenced construction on a new train depot in Nässjö, Sweden.
The project is a turnkey contract worth nearly $65.1m (SEK550m), which will be executed in a partnership between NCC and Region Jönköping County’s subsidiary RJL Tågdepån Nässjö.
The Nässjö train depot is being constructed for the service and maintenance of new trains, which will begin to serve the routes in and around the county starting from 2024.
Spanning nearly 7,500m2 of area, the depot features four maintenance tracks, maintenance station, washing and cleaning facilities, warehouse and office premises.
NCC stated that the project includes a sustainability programme that focuses on renewable electricity, eco-friendly materials, sustainable surface water management and reduction of transport journeys.
The office section of the facility will be built using a wooden framework while the building’s roof will be fitted with solar panels in line with this objective.
Besides, the water from the washing facility can be recycled to lower usage.
Jönköpings Länstrafik Transport director Carl-Johan Sjöberg said: “Together with the new trains, the depot creates the conditions for the continued development of sustainable travel in and between counties.
“The new depot will contribute to enhanced know-how in relation to rail vehicles and maintenance and will also create new jobs. For passengers, train traffic will be more stable and Nässjö’s role as a rail travel centre will also be strengthened.”
The preparatory groundwork on the new depot has already commenced and is scheduled to complete in spring 2023.
NCC Building Sweden business area manager Henrik Landelius said: “This is a strategically important initiative that is timely and promotes and safeguards sustainable travel. By working in partnering form and with our extensive experience of earlier depots, such as Kärråkra in Hässleholm and Norsborg in Stockholm, we are looking forward to delivering a train depot for the train traffic of the future in and around Jönköping County.”
