China Civil Engineering Construction (CCECC), a subsidiary of China Railway Construction (CRCC), has signed a contract worth $3.02bn for work on Nigerian Eastern Railway from Port Harcourt to Maiduguri in Nigeria.

On behalf of Nigerian Government, Federal Ministry of Transportation has awarded the contract to the company.

The scope of work under the contract involves rehabilitation and reconstruction of the existing eastern railway line as well as construction of new branch lines.

The Nigerian Eastern Railway connects the country’s second largest port, Port Harcourt in the Southeast and Maiduguri in the north eastern state of Borno, passing through 12 states and connecting many important cities in the east.

It is also claimed to be a vital component of the Nigerian railway network.

Upon completion, the project will be interconnected with standard gauge railways and will also connect ports and important cities in the country.

It will also help to speed up industrialisation and urbanisation in the country and promote development and usage of resources along the route.

CCECC said: “Along the proposed Nigerian backbone railway network with three vertical and five horizontal railways, there are cities and towns with great potential for industrial development, active commercial activities and abundant tourism resources, therefore having strong demands for passenger and freight transport.”

Recently, the construction engineering company has commenced construction on Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line Project (Phrase I) in Western Africa.

The LRMT Red Line Project is the second light rail upon completion of the Blue Line project by CCECC Nigeria.
