Apple has announced the construction of its R&D facility called Silicon Design Center in Germany – touted to be the largest in Europe – with a planned investment of over €1bn.
The 30,000m2 facility, whose focus is connectivity, 5G and future wireless technologies, will be built in Karlstrasse, central Munich. The California-based American multinational technology company and iPhone maker will be moving into the new building around the end of 2022.
Silicon Design Center will house Apple’s increasing cellular unit and will be Europe’s largest R&D facility for mobile wireless semiconductors and software.
Apple CEO Tim Cook exclaimed: “I couldn’t be more excited for everything our Munich engineering teams will discover — from exploring the new frontiers of 5G technology, to a new generation of technologies that bring power, speed, and connectivity to the world.”
Munich already claims to be Europe’s largest Apple engineering hub, with a workforce of nearly 1,500 engineers from around 40 countries working in the fields of power management design, application processors, wireless technologies, etc.
The engineers employed at the facility will focus on development, integration, and optimisation of wireless modems for Apple products.
