A joint venture (JV) between Geotechnical solutions specialist, Keller Group and VSL International (KVJV) has secured a £167m contract for geotechnical work on HS2.
Align, a joint venture of Bouygues Travaux Publics SAS (a subsidiary of Bouygues Construction), Sir Robert McAlpine and VolkerFitzpatrick (a subsidiary of VolkerWessels UK), has awarded the contract to KVJV.
Align is building the C1 section of the new high-speed line between London and the West Midlands. This 21.6km section of high-speed rail infrastructure includes a 3.4km viaduct and twin-bore 16km tunnels under the Chilterns.
Under the contract, which is part of the C1 package on HS2, KVJV will be responsible for the construction of the piled foundations for the viaducts, grouting works, retaining structures for four ventilation shafts, and ground improvement works for the execution of the tunnel cross passages.
Already completing site investigations and pile testing, KVJV is now working on advance works for the south portal of the tunnel, which will be the entry point for the tunnel boring machines, and the first diaphragm wall for one of the ventilation shafts.
Approximately 270 people will be required to work during peak of production on the site.
