BAM Construction has secured a £29m deal in Dartford, Kent for the construction of the Stone Lodge School.

The original design of the school building was developed by BAM. Work on the three-storey school building is now going on at a good pace, following a pre-construction period.

BAM claims to have already conducted ecological investigations, translocated wildlife and diverted public rights of way, at the site.

BAM construction director Mick Kelly said: “The design at Stone Lodge takes account of learning from our recently completed scheme, the School of Science and Technology in Maidstone.

“That project was up-to-date evidence of how we go about our work. We have also got a highly experienced construction manager in Daniel Brenchley who lives in Kent and has built many education buildings across the county.”

Through BAM’s integrated capabilities with BAM Design and BAM Services Engineering, the new school will benefit from the delivery of the mechanical and electrical elements.

Presently, the school is operating from temporary premises. When the new building will be completed and handed over in February 2022, it will be home to around 1,200 student and an additional 250 or so sixth form students. It will also include a separate sports block and external pitches.

Under Section 278, BAM will also develop an access road, enabling the development of a housing estate nearby. The construction company also claims to have taken into account revised operating procedures needed to be COVID-safe.

BAM construction manager Daniel Brenchley said: “By bringing more of the work in-house we increase co-ordination and reduce risks, which helps us deliver the programme for the school and it enhances our ability to use digital techniques and find modular solutions.

“BAM originally learned it had become successful in its competitive tender on the day lockdown was announced. So, immediately we required an adjustment to this new way of working for our teams as we began to develop the design.”
