British real estate investment trust (REIT) company SEGRO has announced the start of construction works at the SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton Gateway.

The company has been conducting enabling works including ecology, archaeology and ground investigations since summer last year to prepare the site for construction.

Located next to junction 15 of the M1 motorway, the 450-acre site will be developed into a multi-modal logistics hub comprising five million square feet of sustainable warehousing and logistics facilities.

It will also include a dedicated 35-acre Strategic Rail Freight Interchange which will have the capacity for up to 16 trains per day.

The company stated that it is investing around £190m in the infrastructures works which include new rail connections and improvements to the strategic road network.

SEGRO in partnership with Highways England, Network Rail and local authorities will deliver the upgrades to Junctions 15 and 15a on the M1, construct a new bridge over the West Coast Mainline, and a bypass around Roade, as well as, safer junctions along the A508.

The project is expected to create approximately 120 jobs during the construction phase and around 7,500 direct jobs.

Additionally, the project will include more than 80 acres of parkland, 18km of foot paths and cycle ways, 20km of hedgerows and the planting of 60,000 new trees.

Furthermore, the initial plots are expected to be ready for building construction in late this year and the infrastructure works are anticipated to be completed by the end of 2023.
