Spanish infrastructure company Acciona along with its partner RTCC has secured a $384m contract from Saudi publicly-owned Corporation Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) to build the Shuqaiq 1 desalination plant in Saudi Arabia.
To be located on the Red Sea coast in Saudi Arabia, the facility is Acciona’s fifth desalination plant to be constructed in the country and the third awarded by SWCC to the company.
The scope of the contract includes marine works, the civil works on the facility as well as the supply and installation of electromechanical and electrical equipment.
The work also includes start-up and pre- and post-treatment systems the start-up and commissioning.
The Shuqaiq 1 desalination plant will be equipped with reverse osmosis technology and is estimated to have the capacity to treat 400,000m3 of water per day.
Slated to be completed in 2023, the new facility will help to improve the drinking water supply and offset water shortages in south-west Saudi Arabia by providing a new source of potable water.

Last year, the company was awarded a design, build, operation and maintenance contract work $530m for the Shuqaiq3 desalination plant, which is currently under construction and is expected to be completed next year.
Recently, the Spanish company secured a $499m turnkey contract for the Al Khobar RO2 plant in Khobar which will have the capacity to treat more than 630,000m³ of water per day.
It has also been awarded a $240m contract for the construction and start-up of the Al Khobar 1 desalination plant near Al Khobar RO2 seawater desalination plant, which was also designed and built by Acciona.
