Dutch design firm MVRDV has commenced construction on Matrix 1, a sustainable office and laboratory complex in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
The six-storey complex is located in the heart of Amsterdam Science Park, where scientists and entrepreneurs work on sustainable solutions for current and future problems.
The company has designed the new complex for Matrix Innovation Center that also includes UvA’s Faculty of Science, Mathematics and Computer Science (FNWI).
The office and laboratory complex will provide space for homes, data centres and office as well as laboratory space.
It will also feature an open staircase that forms the social heart of the building.
Inspired by the campus path network, the zigzag shape of the stairwell provides various meeting points and spaces for work.

By GlobalDataThe company said that the glass façade follows the zigzag shape and the stairwell is also visible from outside which forms a beacon on the site.
The project will be built using demountable construction techniques where the building can be disassembled at the end of its lifespan to allow 89% of the materials to be reused later.
Slated to be completed in 2022, the new complex is being designed to meet the BREAAM-Excellent certification.
MVRDV partner Frans de Witte said: “Matrix 1 has everything it takes to become a striking landmark that is perfectly integrated into Amsterdam Science Park.
“In De Vreis en Verburg Bouw we have found a contractor who can handle this sustainable construction.
“In the design, all areas are kept flexible: office space can be converted into laboratory space with minor adjustments and vice versa.
“In addition, the common social area in the stairwell offers excellent opportunities for the people who work there to learn from each other.
“Because Matrix 1 will house multiple companies and laboratories, it creates a spirit of cross-fertilisation and innovation.”
