UK-based Morgan Sindall Construction has been selected as the preferred bidder to deliver the first phase of £36m Alconbury Education Hub in Alconbury Weald, Cambridgeshire.
The project is being developed by Urban&Civic (U&C) in partnership with Cambridgeshire County Council (CCC), Huntingdon District Council (HDC), the Diocese of Ely Multi Academy Trust (DEMAT), the Spring Common Academy Trust.
The project represents the next phase of Urban&Civic’s Alconbury Weald project, which includes residential units, a primary school, community facilities, green spaces, play areas and more than one million ft² of business space.
Overall, the project will feature 5,000 new homes, a health centre and a retail hub, sustainable transport links, and more than 500 acres of green space, including a country park.
The first phase of the Alconbury Education Hub will involve the construction of a 600-place secondary school, a 300-place sixth form and a 130-place special free school.
The project site is situated in the centre of the overall development. It will be located at the end of a new park that will transform the old runway of the former Cold War airfield.

By GlobalDataThe schools, which are scheduled to open from September 2023/2024, will form an important landmark, and located next to a civic square, which will connect the schools to the wider community.

Previously, Morgan Sindall Construction had delivered the £8.9m Ermine Street Church Academy in 2016. It was the first school to open as part of the Alconbury Weald development.
