The UK Government had granted development consent for the application of the proposed Great Yarmouth Third River Crossing project.

Great Yarmouth, the new lifting bridge on the River Yare, will connect the A47 at Harfrey’s Roundabout to the west of the River Yare with South Denes Road to the east of the River Yare.

The bridge is expected to ease traffic congestion on the town’s roads, reducing journey times and improving journey reliability along with supporting wider plans and work to maximise investment, regeneration and economic growth opportunities in the town and wider borough.

Construction on the project is expected to start in early 2021 and is scheduled to be open for traffic by early 2023.

The total cost of the bridge is estimated to be around £120m in 2017. Norfolk County Council was awarded £90m towards the project.

In February 2018, Secretary of State for Transport confirmed the project as a nationally significant project.

The Planning Inspectorate CEO Sarah Richards said: “The Planning Inspectorate has again demonstrated its ability to examine Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs) within timescales laid down in the Planning Act 2008 providing developers and investors with the confidence to build and improve the infrastructure this country needs to secure future economic growth.”

In January last year, Norfolk County Council had awarded the bridge construction contract to BAM Farrans joint venture.

The JV is responsible for finalising the design of the twin leaf bascule bridge and its approaches, including a new roundabout on the west side of the river and will also construct the bridge on the council’s behalf.

Great Yarmouth MP Brandon Lewis said: “This is excellent news, the Third River Crossing will be transformational for the whole of the Borough of Great Yarmouth, significantly improving traffic flows, which will help residents and visitors to get around.

“This improved traffic flow will also bring meaningful benefits to local businesses, especially those in the energy sector.”
