Washington University in St. Louis is all set to break ground this month on a new neuroscience research building at on the School of Medical campus, in St. Louis, Missouri.

Expected to cost $616m, the new 11-storey, 609,00ft² research facility will merge, cultivate and advance some of the world’s leading neuroscience research.

When completed in 2023, the new research facility initially will have over 100 research teams, with over 875 researchers coming from a wide array of disciplines such as medical school’s neurology, neuroscience, neurosurgery, psychiatry and anesthesiology departments.

The research teams will work on solving the mysteries of the brain and the body’s nervous system.

The university said that its School of Medicine is touted to have a long history of being one of the foremost centres of neuroscience research in the world and is also a leading institution in studying Alzheimer’s disease.

Its scientists have also identified key molecules involved in sculpting the development of the nervous system and triggering neurodegenerative diseases, mapped connections from brain region to brain region and developed novel surgical treatments for nerve injuries, among other discoveries.

The research centre is expected to inspire entrepreneurial pursuits, as visionary business developers are located within close proximity. It will be located at the eastern edge of the Medical Campus, in the 200-acre Cortex Innovation Community, which is home to several biotech startups founded by Washington University faculty, staff and students.
