Birmingham City Council has selected Kier Highways as the preferred bidder to manage the 15-month interim highway services contract.
The contract, which is expected to be signed later this month, will include the city traffic operations, planned and reactive maintenance, inspections and winter servicing. The contract is expected to begin from 1 April 2020 and will last till 29 June 2021.
Amey Local Government will exit from the 25-year maintenance and management contract on 31 March 2020, following an agreement with Birmingham City Council and the BHL shareholders signed last June.
Birmingham City Council entered into a £2.3bn, 25-year highways management and maintenance contract with Amey Birmingham Highways, now BHL in 2010 under the Government’s private finance initiative (PFI).
Under the contract, more than 2,500km of road and 5,000km of footways along with 846 structures, three tunnels, 94,000 street lighting columns, 76,000 highway trees and the city’s traffic control system.
BHL CEO Natasha Rouse said: “We look forward to working with Kier. The company has put together a robust offer that demonstrates its ability to provide a good quality of service and mobilise quickly and efficiently. We aim to achieve a seamless transition to our new provider while continuing to service the city’s highways network.”

Separately, Kier had announced the topping out at HMT Sancta Maria Hospital in SA1, Swansea. The £15.8m development will offer a range of new healthcare facilities such as operating theatres, MRI, endoscopy and an X-ray unit along with 12 en-suite bedrooms and a café within a new building with on-site parking.
The building will also include new diagnostic equipment, including an MRI scanner, purpose-built consulting and wardrooms. Construction began last March and is due to be completed by this autumn.
