Architecture firm Populous has been selected to design the new multi-use event arena in Munich, Germany.
Following planning approval from Freising City Council, SWMUNICH Real Estate will construct and operate the modern, multifunctional concert and congress arena, which will have a capacity for up to 20,000 visitors.
The new facility will be built beside LabCampus, the technology and innovation centre at Munich Airport. It is backed by a private sector investment of more than $326.8m (€300m).
Populous stated that its design was selected following a multi-stage architecture competition.
The seating at the new arena is arranged in a horseshoe shape (270°) and will focus on the multifunctional stage.
The new facility’s structure will allow visitors to see inside the arena, even from a distance.

By GlobalDataThe interior design of the arena is designed to consider the increasing demands of artists in terms of stage shows, technology, and productions.
The centre will be tailored to the needs of organisers, artists, and visitors, to provide concert and live experiences.
Populous senior principal and project lead architect Declan Sharkey said: “The design for MUCcc Arena places people at its heart, delivering a unique and immersive visitor experience, as well as showcasing the very latest in sustainable design methods.
“The project will create a new cultural centre for Munich, and the wider Bavarian region, to rival the best live entertainment venues in the world.”
The lifecycle-based planning has been designed to reduce the carbon footprint at the time of construction, and climate-positive management during the operating phase.
The new event arena will have several thousand solar panels on the roof, as well as around the site.
