The Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (CNTW) in the UK has selected Sir Robert McAlpine as the design and construction contract delivery partner for the Care Environment Development and Re-provision (CEDAR) upgrade programme.
As part of the £72.6m CEDAR programme, a new integrated mental health and learning disability medium-secure centre of excellence will be created at Northgate Hospital in Morpeth.
The programme also includes the reconfiguration of the Ferndene children and young people’s mental health and learning disability unit at Prudhoe.
Additionally, mental health adult acute inpatient services for Newcastle and Gateshead would be reconfigured and re-provisioned at St Nicholas Hospital’s Bamburgh Unit in Gosforth.
Construction works at the Northgate and Ferdene hospitals are currently progressing.
CNTW NTW Solutions capital developments and planning head John Carson said: “These exciting projects mark just the latest in a long line of service innovations and investment in the trust’s buildings to ensure that our service users have access to safe, high-quality care and demonstrate the trust’s commitment to collaborative partnership working as the route to the best results.”

By GlobalDataThe new medium secure centre at Northgate will provide better mental health services for patients in the region.
As part of the Ferndene unit remodelling, two wards are planned to be converted to medium-secure standards.
These works are scheduled for completion by December next year for welcoming patients in early 2023.
Work on the remodelling and extension of the existing building at the Bamburgh Clinic will start once the Northgate and Ferndene projects conclude.
Sir Robert McAlpine noted that the work would be carried out through a project partnership with the design team Medical Architecture, Cad 21 and BGP.
