Galliford Try, a UK-based construction group, has been awarded a £66.5m ($88.5m) contract to build the Banwell bypass for North Somerset Council.
The Banwell bypass construction project, financed through the Homes England Housing Infrastructure Fund, was obtained via the Procure Partnerships Framework.
This framework ensures compliant procurement for public sector projects across various sectors, including construction and infrastructure.
The bypass will address the current traffic bottleneck north of Banwell village on the A38 route towards Weston-super-Mare.
The construction of the bypass is expected to facilitate housing development opportunities in the vicinity. Additionally, the project includes the creation of new routes for walking, cycling, and horse-riding.
This new scheme adds to Galliford Try’s portfolio of infrastructure projects, following the recent contracts of the South East Aylesbury Link Road and the A47 schemes in Norfolk.

By GlobalDataNorth Somerset Council leader and councillor Mike Bell said: “It’s good news that Homes England have given another green light to the Banwell bypass, providing the funding boost we need to continue the work already underway to build the bypass.
“Not only does the scheme form an important part of our ambition to deliver £450m of capital investment into local infrastructure, but it is also supports further economic growth for our area and helps us to deliver on our Local Plan ambitions.
“It’s set to remove a notorious congestion pinch point from Banwell village, improving links between Weston-super-Mare and the A38, while also providing walking, cycling and horse-riding routes to help promote sustainable travel.
“This bypass has been almost a century in the making and – together – we have overcome twists, turns and other bumps in road, pulling out all the stops as we arrive ever closer to making the scheme a reality.”
Additionally, the company’s Building London and South East Commercial division has recently finished the 127 Charing Cross Road project for its client Nomura Real Estate Development and Lothbury Investment Management, the development manager.
The 127 Charing Cross Road development involved the partial demolition and extension of a 1970s structure, culminating in a mixed-use building with modern office space and retail areas.
The building, which now covers 78,523ft², is designed to achieve high environmental and technological standards, contributing to the Soho Conservation Area.
In February 2025, Galliford Try’s Building London and South East Commercial business celebrated the topping out of a build-to-rent building in north London.
