The joint venture (JV) between infrastructure company AECOM and engineering services business AtkinsRéalis has been commissioned by the Highways Department of the Hong Kong SAR (HKSAR) Government to provide a suite of technical services for the Northern Metropolis Highway (NMH) project.

This project is expected to improve east-west connectivity within Hong Kong’s Northern Metropolis development, driving economic expansion and bolstering the area’s research, development, and technology industries.

The partners will undertake a comprehensive assessment of the NMH’s engineering feasibility and constructability. This will include evaluating potential alignment options, conducting preliminary design work, and carrying out extensive assessments on traffic, environmental impact, land acquisition, and other critical factors.

Utilising its expertise within Hong Kong’s New Development Areas, AECOM plans to implement technologies such as digital twins, building information modelling, and Design for Manufacturing and Assembly. These techniques are expected to result in cost-effective designs and an expedited construction programme.

The NMH, a significant component of the HKSAR Government’s Strategic Studies on Railways and Major Roads programme beyond 2030, will extend approximately 23km.

It will create a vital link between Tin Shui Wai in the west and the New Territories North New Town near Ping Che in the east, reducing congestion on major highways in the region.

Designed to mainly feature dual three-lane sections, the NMH will include at least eight major interchanges that connect existing roads and New Development Areas.

Earlier in March this year, the AECOM and AtkinsRéalis JV was selected by the Civil Engineering and Development Department of the HKSAR Government for the design and construction of Package 3 of the New Territories North – San Tin / Lok Ma Chau Development Node in Hong Kong.
