Logistics company DP World has commenced the expansion of the Duke Point Terminal in Vancouver, British Columbia (BC), Canada.
The Duke Point Terminal expansion project, supported by Snuneymuxw First Nation and the Port of Nanaimo, will nearly double the terminal’s berth length from 182m to 325m.
This will increase the terminal’s cargo-handling capacity to 280,000 20ft equivalent units annually, allowing the terminal to accommodate international vessels and enhance services for both importers and exporters.
The expansion will facilitate regional and international trade by establishing a short-sea shipping connection between Nanaimo and Vancouver, which will improve trade routes to key Asian markets.
The terminal will also see the addition of a 26,000ft² covered storage area for pulp products and the replacement of the current diesel-powered quay crane with two fully electric cranes.
The project has received the free and informed consent of Snuneymuxw First Nation and is underpinned by a 50-year lease agreement between DP World and the Port of Nanaimo.
The expansion is being funded through a combination of public and private investments, including C$46.2m ($32.6m) from the National Trade Corridors Fund and C$15m from the Province of British Columbia under the Regional Port Enhancement Program.
The launch was marked by a land-blessing and ground-breaking ceremony, attended by representatives from Snuneymuxw First Nation, Port of Nanaimo, and DP World.
Port of Nanaimo president and CEO Ian Marr said: “Through projects like the Duke Point Phase 2/3 Terminal Expansion, the Port of Nanaimo, and our partners, are creating cooperative solutions to current operating constraints in the supply chain. This is a catalyst for reconciliation, diversification, job creation in our local community, and cooperative economic development opportunities for BC and Canada.”
DP World’s Canadian operations expand across the country, with key terminals situated in Vancouver, Nanaimo, Fraser Surrey, Prince Rupert, and Saint John. The company continues to invest in its Canadian ports to improve operational efficiency, extend service offerings, and deliver better value to its customers.
In May 2024, DP World, in collaboration with Saudi Ports Authority, began constructing a new logistics park at Jeddah Islamic Port in Saudi Arabia.
