Ringway, a highway services provider across the UK, has secured a highway maintenance contract from Hertfordshire County Council.

The contract, set to commence on 1 October 2025, focuses on enhancing the operational delivery of essential services.

The new seven-year contract with Ringway, potentially valued at over £55m ($71.3m) annually, also has the potential for extensions beyond its initial term.

The contract will encompass a range of services, including road maintenance, pothole and street lighting repairs, signal repairs, emergency responses, and seasonal tasks such as gritting and grass cutting.

To support the development of a sustainable road and transport network for forthcoming generations, the contract emphasises the delivery of transport and infrastructure schemes designed to encourage residents to walk, wheel, and cycle.

The tender process highlighted detailed plans for innovative and sustainable projects, which align with the council’s ambition for carbon-neutral operations by 2030.

Structured to be flexible, the contract will adapt to the council’s changing priorities and funding availability.

The awarding of the contract followed a competitive tender process, which spanned 12 months.

It included provisions for apprenticeship programmes and the development of a local supply chain to bolster Hertfordshire-based businesses, particularly those providing opportunities to individuals facing barriers to employment.

Hertfordshire County Council executive member for highways and transport councillor Phil Bibby said: “While we had three excellent bids, Ringway’s vision for an innovative, data-driven service, focused on efficient and effective operational delivery for our residents, sealed the deal. The commitments they made in relation to trialling new fuels, introducing more electric vehicles to their fleets and using recyclable materials where possible will go a long way to supporting us in our cleaner, greener, and healthier ambitions.”

“The benefit this contract will bring to the local community of Hertfordshire includes more jobs, commitments to offer apprenticeships to young people from all backgrounds, and to help those from the local area build a career in the industry. We are confident that awarding this contract to Ringway will deliver the best service for Hertfordshire and can’t wait to get started.”

Yesterday (19 March), Gloucestershire County Council in the UK announced the start of the next phase of enhancements for the A435 Cheltenham to Bishop’s Cleeve Cycleway, scheduled for this May.
