The Ontario provincial government in Canada has awarded the contract for the East Harbour Transit Hub, a project aimed at enhancing transit access for thousands and supporting more than 50,000 jobs in the area.
This development is part of a broader initiative to provide faster and more convenient transit options across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, connecting users to both GO Transit and the Ontario Line.
The construction of the East Harbour Transit Hub is a collaborative effort, involving a joint venture (JV) comprising AtkinsRéalis, an engineering services company, and Bird Construction, a domestic builder.
They will be working alongside Hatch, a professional services company, to deliver the project.
Upon completion, the hub is expected to cater to approximately 100,000 daily riders.
It is projected to divert up to 14,000 passengers from Union Station during peak rush hours, potentially reducing congestion at the station by as much as 14%.
Situated east of the Don Valley Parkway and south of Eastern Avenue, the East Harbour Transit Hub will serve the Riverdale, Riverside, and Leslieville communities.
The East Harbour Transit Hub represents a joint initiative between the Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario, and the City of Toronto.
Toronto mayor Olivia Chow said: “People depend on public transit to be fast, reliable and get them where they need to go. Riders will now enjoy a better public transit experience.
“The East Harbour Transit Hub will serve 100,000 people per day on the Ontario Line and GO Transit, resulting in less crowding at Union Station. We are working together to build a better transit system for Torontonians.”
Earlier in January this year, the aforementioned governments announced a joint investment of C$975m ($679.5m) to expedite Waterfront Toronto’s revitalisation plan.
