Hercules, a foundation engineering company under the Nordic construction business NCC, has won a contract from infrastructure provider Infrakraft for a new double-track rail line project on the Hallsberg-Stenkumla section in Sweden.

The contract, valued at approximately Skr210m ($20.3m), includes foundation work for the Swedish Transport Administration’s rail line development.

Hercules will be responsible for piling and sheet pile driving along the 14km Hallsberg-Stenkumla section.

This segment, which has complicated ground conditions, involves the construction of several bridges, and a 2.4km-long tunnel.

Infrakraft division manager Mats Lindahl said: “The ground conditions along parts of the section are difficult, which is an important reason why we have chosen to work with Hercules Grundläggning.

“In addition to having the necessary specialist expertise, it also has the size to handle such extensive foundation engineering work. Furthermore, we have great confidence in Hercules due to our long and solid relationship with the company.”

The project is a part of the Swedish Transport Administration’s initiative to build the double-track rail line between Hallsberg and Degerön.

The 50km railway stretch from Hallsberg to Degerön is integral to the Godsstråket freight line through Bergslagen. It is a key link for freight transportation within Sweden and extends into Europe.

The foundation work is scheduled to begin in early 2025, with projected completion in the third quarter (Q3) of 2026.

This order will be registered under the NCC Infrastructure business area in Q1 2025.

NCC Infrastructure Hercules Grundläggning head Håkan Hakeröd said: “We are looking forward to working on such a critical railway project where, for example, our specialist piling expertise will come into its own. We manufacture our own concrete piles, which ensures an efficient process and gives us the high quality we demand.”

Recently, NCC entered a partnering agreement with mining company LKAB to build a new sorting plant in Gällivare, Sweden.

Furthermore, in January 2025, NCC and the Liseberg amusement park sealed an agreement for the reconstruction of the Oceana Water World in Gothenburg, Sweden.
