Scandinavian construction company Veidekke has secured a contract from Norwegian housing developer OBOS to construct the Oen circular housing project at Ammerud in Oslo, Norway.

The turnkey contract is valued at Nkr490m ($43.8m) excluding VAT.

Veidekke Bygg Oslo department manager Kaare Gilhus said: “It has been over seven years since we started planning to build the circle with OBOS, and we are looking forward to building a climate-friendly apartment building with a passive house shell and renewable energy from solar cells on the entire roof.”

The Oen project is set to comprise 133 apartments distributed across four to five floors, complete with communal spaces such as a reception room, guest rooms, and hobby rooms designed for activities such as bicycle repairs.

Additionally, the development will include storage rooms and parking facilities for bicycles and cars in the basement.

As a zero-emission building, Oen aims to produce sufficient energy to offset its operational energy consumption.

This goal will be primarily achieved through the installation of 1,400 solar panels on the roof and the construction of the building to passive house standards with an energy class A rating.

OBOS executive vice-president Ingunn Andersen Randa said: “Now we can finally get this project in Groruddalen realised. There is a great need for more housing in this part of Oslo, and many interested parties have already expressed interest in buying a home here. Oen is an exciting and sustainable project that will help to lift the entire area.”

Construction on the Oen project is scheduled to commence in April this year and is expected to be completed by early 2027.

The contract will be recorded in Veidekke’s order book for the first quarter of 2025.

Last month, the company secured a contract for a new residential block in Råsunda, near Stockholm, Sweden, for the city of Solna’s public housing foundation, Signalisten.
