A housing project in South Wokingham, England, involving the construction of 1,434 new homes, has received final approval from Wokingham Borough Council.

The council’s decision comes after its initial resolution to grant planning permission in May 2021.

In addition to the new homes, the project will introduce a primary school and various public spaces to the area.

Miller Homes and Kier Property will execute the project, which is part of the South Wokingham Strategic Development Location in Berkshire.

Construction is anticipated to start in early 2025, contingent upon the approval of reserved matters applications and the fulfilment of planning conditions.

The development’s blueprint includes a Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace methodology to mitigate its environmental impacts.

Miller Homes Southern managing director David Brown said: “This project represents an important step forward in providing much-needed housing, infrastructure, and amenities for this part of South Wokingham.

“The new primary school and public open spaces will enhance the area, creating a thriving community for future residents. Our shared commitment to sustainable and timely delivery will ensure the success of this strategic development.”

According to Insider Media, the developers say they are committed to delivering a diverse range of housing options at the site, with 35% of the units being classed as affordable, encompassing social rent, affordable rent, and shared ownership schemes.

The remaining 932 residences, which will include a variety of housing from one-bedroom apartments to five-bedroom family homes, are set to be sold on the open market, further stated the publication.

Kier Property managing director Leigh Thomas said: “By working closely with Miller Homes, Wokingham Borough Council, and the local community, we aim to deliver not only much-needed homes but also sustainable infrastructure and vibrant public spaces that meet the needs of current and future generations.”
