Arcadis, as part of the Plenary PCL Health consortium, has been awarded the lead design role for the QEII Halifax Infirmary Expansion Project in Atlantic Canada.
The project is integral to the redevelopment of Nova Scotia’s QEII Health Sciences Centre, with a timeline spanning six years for complete design, construction, and occupancy.
This initiative aims to replace outdated infrastructure and enhance access to care for the community.
The expansion will encompass a 1.2 million square feet acute care facility, introducing 216 inpatient beds, 16 operating theatres, a new intensive care unit, and an expanded emergency department.
Arcadis healthcare principal and project director David Wood said: “Delivering a modern and sustainable healthcare facility inside an active hospital campus is a complex endeavour requiring collaboration, attention to detail, and creativity.
“Arcadis is proud of the progress made to date and excited about designing a facility that addresses the needs of current patients and staff while building the hospital of the future.”
The facility will be constructed on the existing hospital site, ensuring minimal disruption to current operations while addressing the pressing healthcare needs of the province.
The project is designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver requirements and align with the values of the QEII Health Sciences Centre.
It aims to improve access to quality care while fostering people-focused healing environments that enhance the experiences of both patients and staff.
Arcadis Places global president Juud Tempelman said: “As a world leader in healthcare architecture and design, the QEII Halifax Infirmary Expansion Project reflects Arcadis’ global expertise in developing forward-thinking environments designed to enhance patient care.
“From digital innovation to sustainable design, we are excited to help create a facility that is built with the present and the future in mind.”
The project’s design is expected to create a modern workplace for healthcare professionals and significantly improve patient experiences.
As the lead architect and consultant, Arcadis will oversee all design deliverables, including interior design, architecture, clinical planning, building information modelling services, and landscape architecture.
