Sogea-Satom, a subsidiary of VINCI Construction, has been awarded a contract by the Ugandan National Water Sewerage Corporation to upgrade the water supply network in the country.
The contract involves the renovation, restructuring, and extension of the water supply network in the Kampala metropolitan region.
This project is part of a broader initiative to improve access to treated water for residents, with a focus on enhancing the capacity of the Katosi water treatment plant.
The €92.4m ($97.15m) project funded by the French development agency Agence Française de Développement is set to involve up to 500 workers for the development.
Key components of the work include the installation of 70km of cast-iron pipes, the construction of large reinforced concrete reservoirs, and the establishment of two new pumping stations, alongside the renovation of two existing ones.
The work will take place in densely populated urban areas, necessitating the excavation of 3m-deep trenches and the rerouting of certain networks.
Scheduled for completion in August 2027, the project will significantly enhance access to treated water for 1.5 million people.
Sogea-Satom has been operational in Uganda since 1990 and has previously constructed drinking water treatment plants in Ggaba, Katosi, and Karuma.
In related news, VINCI Construction has secured two contracts from the Czech Republic’s Ministry of Transport for transport infrastructure projects in the country.
The contracts, totalling €417m, involved the construction of a new section of the ring road to the east of Prague and modernising Central Europe’s reportedly largest freight station’s rail hub.
