Webuild US subsidiary Lane has initiated the construction of the Interstate 77 (I-77) Interchange highway project, in South Carolina, US.

This infrastructure development’s contract, valued at $152m, was awarded to Lane in December 2024 by the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

The project is a pivotal step for the infrastructural and economic development of the region, as it is claimed to ensure direct access to the future plant of Scout Motors at Blythewood.

This plant, a benchmark for the electric vehicle manufacturing sector, is expected to generate up to 4,000 new jobs and drive economic growth for the area.

The contractual works are designed to support the increasing regional transport demands, simultaneously enhancing viability and easing traffic congestion.

The project encompasses the construction of a system with four new bridges and ramps to facilitate traffic flow, a new east-west road connecting Exit 26 to US 21, and a realignment of US 21 to accommodate a grade-separated Norfolk Southern rail spur.

Additionally, the project includes the expansion of the I-77 northbound lanes to boost capacity and efficiency, along with interchange upgrades to improve both local and regional travel.

The construction activities are planned to cause minimal disruption to the local territory and community.

Webuild, known for designing and constructing large, complex infrastructure projects in sustainable mobility, hydropower, water treatment, and green buildings, operates in 50 countries and employs more than 92,000 people.

The company, with a presence in Australia, Europe, and the US, alongside Lane, has a track record in the US, collaborating with institutions to enhance the country’s road and highway network.

Currently, the group is involved in several key projects within the US, including the upgrade of the I-275/I-4 Downtown Tampa Interchange in Florida and the I-77/I-40 Interchange in Iredell County, North Carolina.

In South Carolina, besides the I-77 Interchange project, Lane is also working on the I-20 Bridges over the Wateree River and other related infrastructure in Kershaw County.

In April last year, Lane was awarded a $110m contract to construct the Newport News Segment of the I-64 Hampton Roads Express Lanes in Hampton, Virginia, US, anticipated for completion by early 2027.
