Nordic construction company Peab has secured a Nkr159m ($14.3m) contract from Giske Municipality to build the new Vigra School in Giske, Norway.

As part of the project, the site’s current school buildings will be demolished and a new 3,270m² educational facility will be built in their place.

Outdoor areas, parking, and access roads will also be developed as part of this turnkey contract.

Students will utilise parts of the existing buildings and temporary barracks during the construction period.

The demolition work is set to commence in early 2025, with the new school’s occupancy planned for February 2027. The project will be registered by the company in the first quarter of this year.

Giske Municipality expansion and construction head Robert Valderhaug said: “We’re particularly happy to have a local contractor with local craftsmen win this contract. This means we can feel safe as the developer in every phase of the project.

“Construction work will take place while the school is still running and safety will of course be our highest priority.”

Peab Norway district manager Ola Blindheim said: “We feel a great responsibility and appreciate being entrusted as the general contractor for this fantastic school project. It’s inspiring for us to build something that benefits our own local community. We look forward to starting and collaborating with Giske Municipality.”

Last week, Peab announced the receipt of a contract to construct a new school and health centre in Karasjok, Norway, for Karasjok Municipality.

This development will span 12,630m² and will feature a modern school for up to 240 pupils, from grades one to ten, as well as a comprehensive health centre.

Earlier this month, Peab also obtained a Nkr113m contract from Lillestrøm Municipality for the expansion of Skjetten Elementary School in Norway. The expansion will cover an additional 2,000m² and is designed to meet high environmental standards.
