Nottingham City Council in the UK has signed a £12.6m ($15.7m) delivery contract with construction and infrastructure provider Balfour Beatty to construct an 85m-long walking and cycling bridge over the River Trent.
The new network arch bridge will stand 20m high and weigh approximately 160 tonnes. It will connect the Trent Basin community on the north side of the river to the south side’s sports facilities and green spaces.
The project is fully funded by the national government’s Transforming Cities Fund.
The programme was launched after Nottingham and Derby, through a joint bid, secured more than £160m from the national government to support projects that promote intercity connections and environmentally friendly travel options.
The contract signing marks the commencement of the bridge scheme, with the initial on-site activity being the demolition of a warehouse formerly occupied by Flo Skate Park to clear space for construction.
Balfour Beatty will transport equipment, materials, and cabins to the site next month. From April 2025, pilings will be installed to support the bridge structure.

By GlobalDataLater in the year, the bridge will be assembled using prefabricated steel sections sourced from local company Briton Fabricators.
By this November, the bridge is expected to be lifted into place, with additional works such as ramps, steps, and landscaping finished by late 2025.
The bridge is set to formally open in early 2026.
Nottingham City Council Strategic Regeneration, Transport and Communications executive member, leader, and councillor Neghat Khan said: “Once completed, the bridge will enhance Nottingham’s cycling and pedestrian network, providing a safe, traffic-free route over the river and empowering more people to travel sustainably and healthily.”
The new bridge will be the first built in the city since the 1950s.
