Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has announced plans to construct a double-decker flyover in Coimbatore, India.
The 3km flyover will extend from the Goldwins area to Le Méridien Hotel, reported the Times of India.
The flyover’s upper deck will facilitate metro rail operations while the lower deck will cater to vehicular traffic, eliminating the need for separate land acquisition.
The project was reportedly disclosed by G Manuneethi, divisional engineer for highways (road safety) in Coimbatore, during a session on ‘Coimbatore City Flyovers – Latest Update’, organised by the region’s Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Manuneethi said, according to the news agency: “The project cost will reduce drastically once the highways and CMRL work together from Goldwins to Le Méridien Hotel.”
The state’s highways (special project) division is also working on a 10.1km elevated corridor from the Uppilipalayam area to Goldwins on Avinashi Road.

By GlobalDataIn November 2024, the Indian state of Tamil Nadu’s chief minister M K Stalin announced the extension of this elevated corridor by an additional 5km from Goldwins to the Neelambur suburb.
The state government earmarked Rs6bn ($69m) for this extension.
Following the announcement, the state highways (special project) wing initiated land surveys and soil testing, and a detailed project report has since been prepared.
Complementing these developments, CMRL has also revealed its intention to carry out corridor-I work, which will connect the Ukkadam bus stand to the Neelambur integrated station via Coimbatore International Airport, covering a distance of 20.4km.
A state highways department official said: “The CMRL is going to acquire lands from Anna Statue to Goldwins. The CMRL approached the state highways to work together for a stretch of 3km from Goldwins to Le Méridien Hotel as the CMRL doesn’t need to acquire land. A double-decker flyover will be constructed in the 3km stretch.”
A 100ft road is proposed to be constructed from Le Méridien Hotel to the airport terminal building.
