TERRATEC, a manufacturer of tunnel boring machines (TBMs), has announced that its 3.2m-diameter open TBM is ready to commence operations on the City and Industrial Development Corporation’s (CIDCO) Fresh Water Tunnel Project in Maharashtra, India.

The TBM, operated by Patel Engineering, is expected to be a key component in the construction of the tunnel, which will connect Sai Village to Vindhane Village in the state.

TERRATEC noted that its TBM is designed to handle the diverse geological conditions along the project’s route and boasts a modular design that facilitates both shaft launches and in-tunnel disassembly if necessary.

The machine’s CutterHead is fitted with 15in heavy-duty back-loading disc cutters and is driven by variable frequency drive-controlled electric motors.

This setup enables the cutter head to rotate at speeds more than 10rpm while maintaining optimal torque.

For safety and efficiency in various tunnel sections, the TBM is equipped with a suite of ground-support tools. These include a fixed probe drilling unit, two rock-bolting drills, and a steel arches erector, all key to maintaining the integrity of the tunnel as it progresses.
