Granite Construction, an American company, has received a contract worth approximately $71m from the US Army Corps of Engineers to expand and improve the rail yard at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, US.
The project, for which funding will stem from federal sources, was included in Granite’s 2024 third-quarter capitalisation rate.
Granite’s work will involve adding new loading spurs, expanding the vehicle staging area, and establishing a secondary connection between the rail yard and the Union Pacific Railroad.
These improvements are aimed at increasing the rail yard’s capacity, enhancing efficiencies, and shortening the time needed for rail loading operations.
Granite Regional Operations vice-president Derek Betts said: “Our work at Fort Bliss not only showcases Granite’s capabilities, but also strengthens our internal partnerships and provides growth opportunities for our employees.”
Construction is scheduled to begin next month, with completion expected by June 2027.
