The Finnish city of Turku, and NCC, a Nordic construction company, have reached an agreement for the construction of a new school and preschool in the district of Järkälä.

The project, valued at approximately Skr195m ($17.47m), is set to provide modern educational facilities while adhering to environmental standards.

The planning and development phase, which began late last year, has paved the way for immediate construction commencement.

The new school building, covering an area of 4,700m², will cater to approximately 260 school students and 170 preschool children.

In line with the Finnish Ympäristöluokitus environmental classification, the project aims to ensure the building’s operations are characterised by low water and energy consumption.

To further this goal, rooftop solar panels will be installed to secure low operating costs, and an emergency power system will be incorporated for resilience in times of crisis.

Construction is set to start without delay, with the anticipated completion date at the beginning of the 2026 late-year term.

This contract will be registered in the first quarter of 2025 within the NCC Building Nordics business area.

NCC Building Nordics regional manager Esa Lehmusvuori said: “By dividing the project into two phases with a thorough development and planning phase before we commence construction, we can ensure that the result will match the desired outcome for all parties. For example, we have worked with school staff to ensure we have a school that is fit for purpose.”

City of Turku construction engineer Marko Koskinen said: “The project has required strong cooperation between the contractor, the client and the designers. The involvement of future users in the design has also played an important role in ensuring that high-quality plans were implemented during the tight development phase.

“Without effective cooperation with good partners and users, this would not have been possible.”

Earlier this month, NCC formalised an agreement with the Liseberg amusement park for the reconstruction of Oceana Water World in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Additionally, in December 2024, NCC secured a contract with Sporveien, the Oslo metro and tramway operator, to undertake an extensive refurbishment of the Majorstuten metro station in Oslo, Norway.
