CPL, an American design company, has acquired Richmond-based Commonwealth Architects, marking a strategic expansion into Virginia, US.

Commonwealth Architects will integrate with CPL’s existing offices in Greensboro and Raleigh, enhancing business growth across various sectors in the mid-Atlantic region.

The financial details of the deal have not been disclosed.

CPL chair and CEO Todd Liebert said: “This expansion is an important milestone in our long-term growth strategy and will allow us to further strengthen our legacy of thought leadership and breadth of design services.

“Commonwealth Architects is a small yet mighty firm with expertise in areas we have placed significant focus on for growth [of] our community and higher education practices.”

The deal will create a platform for collaboration across key practice areas, including retail spaces and offices. It combines CPL’s market expertise, resources, and geographic reach with Commonwealth Architects’ design expertise.

Commonwealth Architects president Lee Shadbolt added: “Joining the CPL team will allow us to broaden our scope and scale our services more quickly, while providing a more seamless experience with a deeper bench, to better meet the growing needs of our clients.”

For more than two decades, Commonwealth Architects has built a presence in the state of Virginia.

The company has been involved in community-driven projects and the revitalisation of historic buildings, including transforming a biscuit factory in Richmond and a tobacco plant in Winston into functional, multiuse community spaces.

It also has expertise in higher education centre design, with projects at institutions such as Virginia State University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Norfolk State University.

Shadbolt added: “The shared commitment to sustainability, social harmony, and design functionality makes CPL an ideal partner for our firm. We’re both in the business of creating buildings that people feel good about being in.”
