CF Møller Architects and Förstberg Ling’s design concept, developed in collaboration with urban planning company Softer, have been selected for Malmö University’s new building, Amphitrite 1, in Sweden.
The new building, set to house the Faculty of Odontology and student unions, will be designed with an emphasis on sustainability and historical preservation.
The project aims to create a space that not only serves educational purposes but also enriches the urban environment of Malmö.
Amphitrite 1, which will be located adjacent to the university’s Niagara building, is set to become the new home for the Faculty of Odontology, featuring modern learning environments, administrative spaces, and facilities for the student unions.
The “Magasin för kunskap” (Storehouse of Knowledge) design integrates parts of an existing warehouse, paying homage to the area’s industrial heritage while providing modern amenities for students and the local community.
The architects have prioritised circularity in the building’s design, with goals to reuse or recycle as much of the existing structures as possible. Focusing on sustainability, the building will aim at maximising natural daylight, offering expansive views, and ensuring access to outdoor spaces.

By GlobalDataThe selection process for the design took place in the spring of 2024, with further refinements made in June for the two pre-qualified teams. Møller Architects, Förstberg Ling, and Softer will now proceed to develop their winning concept further.
Wihlborgs, a property company in the Öresund region, has been tasked with the design and planning of Amphitrite 1, in consultation with Malmö University and the City of Malmö. The university is set to lease the building upon its completion, which is scheduled for occupancy in 2027/2028.
Wihlborgs boasts a property portfolio with a book value of Skr58bn ($6.3bn), and an annual property rental value of $500m.
In February 2024, Wihlborgs secured a contract to construct a new facility, including a cross-dock terminal, logistics warehouse, and offices, for Dachser, a German logistics company, in Landskrona, Sweden.
The jury said: “Magasin för kunskap” highlights the specificity of the site and the design reflects its surroundings and its closest university neighbour, Niagara. The building is inviting and connects all of the floors, offering a variety of meeting places and environments to spend time in, both inside and outside the building. This creates conditions for a dynamic campus environment that will also become part of the city.”
