UK-based contracting company ISC has secured a £34m ($42.9m) contract from Cory for the construction of a Waste Transfer Station (WTS) facility in Barking.
The WTS facility to be built by the River Thames is a crucial component of the Riverside 2 development, Cory’s new energy-from-waste plant that will divert 550,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste from landfill annually and generate enough electricity for 176,000 homes.
It will bolster the capacity for managing and transporting waste to Riverside 2, construction of which is underway in Belvedere, south of the Thames.
Cory manages a river transport system, which significantly reduces London’s road congestion by averting around 100,000 lorry movements each year. With Riverside 2, an additional 80,000 lorry movements are expected to be eliminated.
The project includes updating existing site facilities, reactivation of a Safeguarded Wharf, and constructing a new industrial WTS building on a designated site.
Cory development director Chris Girdham said: “We are pleased to be working with ISC on this project, which will bring over £50m of investment into Barking and maximise the potential of the site.

By GlobalData“As well as providing essential capacity for London’s non-recyclable waste, this project will also allow us to reduce the environmental impact of the site on local ecology, reduce pollution and, through the use of the River Roding for transport of materials, substantially improve air quality across London.”
Cory’s modernisation efforts demonstrate a significant investment in waste processing for London and the South East, serving nine boroughs.
Rippleway Wharf, one of the two berths, will be redeveloped for container stacking and barge loading, transitioning waste operations from road-to-road to road-to-river, thus reducing road traffic.
Utilising Thames barges, ISC will transport demolition waste, spoil, and dredged material for recycling, and to deliver construction materials.
ISC, a part of the GRS Group, specialises in enabling works, earthworks, and civil engineering and, operates across the UK.
