Balfour Beatty has secured a substantial contract, valued at $746m, to reconstruct a section of Interstate 35 (I-35) via Austin, Texas, US.

The project is a significant infrastructure development aimed at enhancing capacity and connectivity for the 200,000 drivers who use this segment daily.

The builder will reconstruct a 4km stretch on the south side of downtown Austin.

Upon completion, the revamped roadway will feature eight general-purpose lanes, a major new intersection, and multiple upgraded access roads.

A key aspect of the project involves constructing a new bridge over Lady Bird Lake to replace the existing one, which was built in 1956.

Due to the expansive area and the need for marine construction techniques, the bridge will be erected from a barge.

Additionally, the project includes a bridge and intersection at Riverside Drive, which will support a future light rail line, bolstering the public transport network in the Central Texas Region.

The I-35 reconstruction is part of the Texas Department of Transportation’s I-35 Capital Express Central project.

Main construction is set to begin in the first half (H1) of 2025, with the project’s completion expected in 2033. At its peak, the project will provide employment for more than 150 individuals directly under Balfour Beatty.

Balfour Beatty, with a workforce of 26,000 across the UK, the US, and Hong Kong, operates in infrastructure investments, construction services, and support services.

In the US, the company has 6,000 employees and delivers projects across various sectors, including buildings, highways, rail, and water.

Prior to this undertaking, Balfour Beatty’s US segment was selected to lead the expansion of the runway at Albert J. Ellis Airport in Jacksonville, North Carolina.

The construction agreement, worth roughly £23m ($29.94m), was approved by Onslow County in mid-2024, with the full contract award expected by early 2025. Construction is set to start towards the end of 2024.
