The Western Australian (WA) government has announced the completion of the first phase of enhancements to bolster safety and extend the life of the Port of Esperance heavy vehicle route.  

The Port of Esperance is situated about 700 km southeast of Perth and serves a community of more than 13,000 people.

The recently completed upgrades encompass the installation of 920 tonnes (t) of asphalt, nearly 1 hectare (ha) of road pavement, along with new drainage, kerbing, and safety barriers.  

Additionally, a new truck layover area has been constructed to facilitate smoother truck movements along Hughes Road. 

These improvements to the Hughes Road are part of the Cook Labor Government’s A$19.6m ($13.31m) Road Improvement Programme designated for the Port of Esperance.

Looking ahead, upgrades will focus on reconfiguring the port’s access intersection to support the increased traffic of larger B-triple trucks.

The plan also includes reconstructing degraded areas of road pavement. 

WA Ports Minister David Michael said: “Hughes Road is a crucial link in the Port of Esperance supply chain as the sole heavy access road in and out of the port, facilitating more than five million tonnes of trade over the past year.  

“This critical supply route underpins the agriculture sector, with more than 3.4 million tonnes of grain and 270,000 tonnes of fertiliser delivered to and from the port. The road is now significantly safer and better equipped to handle the continued diverse trade opportunities facilitated by Southern Ports.” 

In September 2024, the WA Government unveiled plans for the refurbishment of Perth Concert Hall.  

The heritage-listed venue, which was inaugurated on 26 January 1973, was originally designed by Jeffrey Howlett and Don Bailey.
