Philippines’ Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed building a flood mitigation structure along the Magat River in Barangay Turod, Reina Mercedes, Isabela.  

This project aims to alleviate the flooding issues in the area, during the rainy season when the Magat Dam spillway gates are opened.

It is supported by a 144.4m pesos ($2.54m) allocation from the 2024 General Appropriations Act. 

The structure extends over 779.8 metres (m) and comprises a concrete dyke spanning the first 441m. This is followed by a concrete revetment with a single berm for the remaining 338.8m.  

In addition, hexapods have been installed for toe protection, enhancing the stability of the riverbanks and preventing erosion and potential collapse.

DPWH secretary Manuel M. Bonoan said: “By ensuring the stability of the riverbanks, we are not only preventing the loss of agricultural productivity but also reducing emergency response costs for the government.” 

The DPWH has also completed the construction of a flood control structure along the Apnikan River, ahead of schedule.  

The project has been executed by the DPWH Mindoro Occidental District Engineering Office. 

It features a 431m concrete revetment wall, reinforced with steel sheet piles to bolster the riverbank’s resistance to severe flooding.  

The 96.4m pesos project, funded through the 2024 General Appropriations Act, is among several disaster mitigation efforts established in Occidental Mindoro to protect communities from flooding and erosion. 

DPWH Regional Office IV-B director Gerald A. Pacanan said: “Before the completion of this project, frequent flooding in the Apnikan River and its adjacent Tubili River severely affected agricultural land, livestock, properties, and the livelihood activities of the residents in Barangay Tubili.”
