Mobis, an electric vehicle (EV) supplier based in South Korea, has announced the construction of a new battery system assembly (BSA) plant in Navarre, Spain.

This development marks the company’s first dedicated facility in Western Europe, aimed at supplying global client Volkswagen

A ground-breaking ceremony for the new plant was held, with Navarre governor María Chivite and Noain Municipality mayor Sebastian Marco in attendance.

The event also saw the presence of major executives from Volkswagen and approximately 100 other stakeholders.

The factory is expected to commence mass production by 2026.

Mobis Spanish electrification plant head Jung In-bo said: “We are committed to being Volkswagen’s long-term partner through stable auto component supplies, and we will strive to diversify our supply base in Europe, including supplying upcoming models for our client.”

The Spanish plant is said to be a strategic move for Mobis, reflecting the company’s focus on ‘electrification’ and ‘expansion of global orders’.

Mobis has committed to investing approximately €120m ($123.67m, excluding land and facility) by 2030 to support this initiative.

The facility will also establish electrification equipment technologies to enhance efficiency.

It will serve as a benchmark model of electrification specifically for global clients.

The plant will span approximately 150,000m², with a building area of 50,000m².

It is projected to produce up to 360,000 battery systems annually.

The BSA units manufactured at the Spanish factory will be installed in Volkswagen’s next-generation EV platforms, which are produced at a factory located 14km away in Pamplona.

BSA is the complete product that integrates electronic components and the battery management system into the battery pack.

This ensures safe and efficient operation in electric vehicles.
