Built Environment – Smarter Transformation (BE-ST) has revealed its plans for the retrofit of the Accelerator Lab at its Hamilton Technology Park Innovation Campus in Scotland, UK.

The campus is home to Scotland’s National Retrofit Centre.

It has secured more than £1.2m ($1.50m) in grant funding from the Scottish Government’s Salix Public Sector Heat Decarbonisation Fund.

The National Retrofit Centre is being revamped into a live example of retrofitting non-domestic buildings.

BE-ST intends to use this opportunity to test and refine retrofitting methods on a large, multifunctional building, addressing the complexities involved in such a process.

The aim is to share real-time insights, challenges, solutions, and lessons learned with stakeholders in the built environment through regular updates on online platforms.

The retrofit will be executed with a ‘fabric-first’ strategy to meet both the International EnerPHit standards and the Scottish Net Zero Public Sector Building standards.

The upgrade will include transitioning from gas heating to a zero direct emissions heating system and incorporating mechanical ventilation with heat recovery.

It will further include curtain walling, a solar photovoltaic integrated roof, and energy-efficient LED lighting controls.

BE-ST Retrofit head and project lead Caitriona Jordan said: “The Accelerator Lab retrofit is a significant step towards understanding what it means to undergo a deep retrofit of a complex, non-domestic building like this.

“We will be learning, documenting and measuring throughout the entire process to meet EnerPHit and Net Zero Public Sector Building Standard requirements – all to create a living case study at BE-ST that we hope will inspire and inform future retrofit across Scotland and beyond.”

The initiative has been designed by John Gilbert Architects, BE-ST, and involves collaboration with Edinburgh Napier University, as well as specialist contractors.

The project supports Edinburgh Napier University’s VISION goal, which aims to develop a sustainable and future-ready campus.
